Roberto Kolter has been hiring postdocs for 3 decades. In that time, he’s seen which postdocs do well and which don’t. With the way science funding is going, and how the competition for professor and tenure-track positions is going, he believes it’s unfair to train anyone who cannot demonstrate independence as a scientist. In this Q&A I asked him why that was, and what he’s learned over the years about what a postdoc position really is.
